Last time I was in the dating world the internet was not widely used for much other than porn. There was no such thing as "online dating" (though some people did meet and marry through BBS or IRC); there was no social media, no match.com, no okcupid, and no tinder. Luckily, being a wee bit tech savvy as I am, I had no problem creating my account and even going to meet folks via the internet (as an online gamer it's not my first time there either).
That said, I do have a general rule; the first time I meet a random stranger off the internet will be in a public place. Even if one is just looking for a hookup, it's just smart to not give out your address without actually meeting the person (guy, girl, whomever).
This, to me, is common sense (which I realize isn't very 'common' anymore). Shockingly though, so many dudes want me to give them my address so they can come over to my house and "hang out" -- which is great if I already know a person, not great for a stranger on the internet; many of whom are classless boars who probably aren't sure what a double entendre is let alone astute enough to actually use one. They seem to prefer to skip straight to sending dick pics or asking for my bra size.
So, public place it is, yes? There has been some hilarious push back on this, as you can see from the below.
